Karen Koehler is a partner with the Stritmatter Kessler Whelan law firm. This is her 30th year in practice.

For nine years Karen was an insurance defense lawyer. She worked for three years with Tom Chambers, her mentor in the practice of plaintiff law. For seven years Pat LePley was her law partner.

Karen received the WSAJ Trial Lawyer of the Year award in 2005 and was its president 2007-2008. She is Executive Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Washington, on the boards of AAJ and WSAJ, in leadership in the AAJ spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury litigation groups, and a member of ABOTA. Her blog the Velvet Hammer ™ has been voted to the ABA’s list of top 100 law blawgs for the past five years where it has also been voted the top litigation blog. She wrote two national treatises with Michael Freeman – Litigating MIST cases and Litigating Major Automjobile Injury and Death cases © ATLA/Thomspon West. She created two DVDs – Preparing for Deposition and Preparing for the Defense Medical Examination distributed by Trial Guides.

Teaching credentials include seven years as an adjunct at the University of Washington School of Law in trial advocacy and five years with the Female Trial Advocacy Program administered by WSAJ. She speaks frequently for AAJ and other trial lawyer programs around the country.

Her daughters grew up playing office and attending WSTLA conventions. They are now almost all done with college. Cristina is a senior recruiter at Hansell Tierney which places primarily IT professionals. Alysha is Director of the UW Mindfulness Project created this year after she presented to the Board of Regents. Noelle is a senior in business at Belmont University in Nashville. Nala is a Brittany Spaniel, but seems like Karen’s fourth daughter.
